Careers in Engineering

Report – Engineering Engineering is the application of science and math to solve problems. Engineers figure out how things work and find practical uses for scientific discoveries. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. Engineers design, evaluate, develop, test, modify, install, inspect and maintain a wide variety of products and systems. Engineering is important because engineers use models provided by science combined with innovative thinking to solve problems and create new designs that benefit humanity.
Career Pathway :

  • Students need to take science (PCM) as a stream in 11th and 12th grade, pursue B. Tech or Bachelors of Engineering
  • Students can also take up 3 year diploma program after grade X and post the lateral entry entrance exam, the student can take admission in second year engineering
Eligibility for Graduation Courses in Engineering:

  • Students from Science Stream (PCM) ONLY are eligible for the course.
  • They must have cleared class 10 +2 from a recognized board/University with at least 45% marks (40% for SC/ ST candidates). However, it may vary for different institutes.
  • 3.Admission to the course is majorly done based on entrance exam scores.
Entrance Exams: The overall entrance exam syllabus for Engineering courses in various colleges evaluates the student on the following criteria. The student should visit college-specific/exam-specific/state-specific websites and understand the entrance exam criteria for the specific exam post they decide on the colleges they want to go to, to pursue the course. Due to COVID 19, a lot of entrance tests are happening online:

  • Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
  • Certain entrances also measure their English language skills and Logical ability
  • Most of the questions are MCQ based

There are THREE ways to appear for entrance exams for engineering:

National Entrance exams:

  • SAT
Govt. State-Specific Entrance exams:

  • MHT CET(The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test)
  • GUJCET (Gujarat Common Entrance Exam)
  • KEA CET (Karnataka Common Entrance Test)
  • AP EAMCET (Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana)
  • WB JEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations)
Deemed University:

  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITSAT)
  • Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala
  • SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination (SRMJEEE)
  • VITEEE is also known as VIT Engineering Entrance Examination

Diploma Courses in Engineering post grade X: Diploma courses can be of a yearly or semester pattern. Most yearly pattern courses have a duration of three years. The diploma programs that follow a semester pattern have a planned duration of four years, with three years of study and one year for an industrial internship. The eligibility that is the minimum qualification required for admission is minimum 35% in science and math subject
Diploma Courses (most sought-after courses):

  • Diploma in Automobile Engineering
  • Diploma in Computer Science & Engineering
  • Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering (DETCE)
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DME)
  • Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering
Skills and Abilities: An aspiring student who needs to ace their course and career in Engineering should have certain skills and abilities to be successful in the career. The student needs to be high in the skill of numerical Reasoning, logical Reasoning, visual-spatial reasoning, and mechanical Reasoning. Along with-it soft skills like leadership and decision making skills and social and cooperation ability are also important.
Personality: The personality of an individual also makes an impact on the profile/specialization the student takes. For pursuing a career in Engineering, an individual could be an introvert/ extrovert or an ambivert with respect to interaction with people. Depending on their personality, they could choose specific profiles they would want to pursue in the future which align with their needs. The individual needs to be more process-oriented and the decision-making skills should be rational. The individual should also be organized to carry out the work hassle-free.
Post-Graduation Courses: The different post-graduation courses post completion of a Bachelor Degree in engineering are:

  • Master of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering
  • MTech in Mechanical Engineering
  • M.Tech Program in Civil Engineering
  • M.Tech Aeronautical Engineering
  • Masters in Chemical Engineering
  • Masters in Electrical Engineering
  • Masters in Software and Communication Engineering

and many more… In addition to this, there are various other courses that the students can apply for depending on their area of interest, skills, and personality. The most sought-after courses in the post-graduation field are Courses in Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Internet Of Things.

Career Options in Engineering: The different career options post studying Engineering are:

  • Technical Officer
  • Senior Technical Assistant, Foreman
  • Junior Engineer
  • Executive Engineers
  • Project Engineer/ Project Manager
  • Application Developer
  • Business/System Analyst
  • Database Administer

There are various other opportunities and roles available for engineering students post their graduation. Depending on the area of interest and their personality, they can choose specific roles. To advance further in the field, a master’s degree is beneficial. Engineering is very closely linked to technology, and the rise of it, which is why it has played a huge part in technological advances including computers, hospital machines, the internet, and more.
