Positive Parenting Seminar

Positive Parenting Seminar – 1st October, 2022

A seminar on positive parenting was conducted by Ramniwas Bajaj English High School (ICSE) in collaboration with Ramdhar Maheshwari Career Counseling Center on 1st October, 2022. The seminar was conducted for parents of students from the pre primary and secondary section to help them inculcate positive parenting practices and build a deeper connection with their children. Post COVID and coming back to school, students and parents have been complaining of academic, behavioral, and emotional concerns due to having major changes in their schedules and online schooling.

Dr. Avinash Desousa, consultant psychiatrist with RMCC, had conducted the session for the parents. Dr. Avinash has numerous years of experience in Adolescent Psychology and is a well renowned speaker who has conducted various parenting sessions. He also conducts counseling sessions with parents and teachers to help them deal effectively with children and teenage behavioral, academic and emotional concerns.

The sessions focused on discussing the core concerns related to both the age groups and how parents can maneuver through these difficulties. For parents from the pre primary section, concerns related to not coming to school and school anxiety, comparison of siblings, understanding of safe and unsafe touch, unhelpful punishment strategies, lack of parent coordination in raising the child,  etc. For parenting from the secondary section, concerns related to changes in adolescence, academic stress, their idea of relationships, how to discipline them, their screen and gaming addiction, etc. were discussed. Dr. Avinash provided relevant examples and very practical strategies to deal with these difficulties and helped the parents reflect on their current unhelpful parenting practices.

In the end, he reiterated the importance of parents being kinder to themselves and believing in themselves and their parenting process. The parents asked him multiple questions and were actively engaged throughout and provided with positive feedback post the session.
