The Art of Therapeutic Story Telling

On 7 th December 2019, RMCC organised a skill building session on “The art of Therapeutic Story Telling” for the mental health professionals. The objective of this skill building seminar was to gain insight into the world of stories and how to have a breakthrough session with children who are unable to express their inner most thoughts and emotions.

The seminar was facilitated by eminent speaker Dr. Tanuja Prem who is a Drama Therapist and a Special Educator

The session begun with an orientation conducted by team RMCC which threw light on about RMCC’s vision and mission to cater every student’s academic and career need and plethora of services offered.

Dr Tanuja was later invited to facilitate the session. The session started with discussing different challenges a professional faces during counselling process. The discussion was overwhelming as there were a lot of myths broken and facts discussed. Different tools used by the Counsellors were also discussed. Counselors shared how different techniques/ therapies have been helpful and how blending therapies and alternate techniques would help the flow of the session

The speaker shared how Story Telling can be effectively used as a therapeutic technique. How the unique features of this technique works wonders and enables client to express their emotions which are playing at their subconscious level.

Different ways through which a story can be told and how it can be used with varied age groups was shared.

Towards the end of the session all the participants were asked to do an activity which was insightful and a lot of participant shared they felt peaceful.

Participants at the end had asked their queries and discussed few case studies on how story telling technique can be used.

The session ended on a successful note with lot of appreciation and encouraging feedback from the participants.
